Lifting the Subject: Phenomenology and the Propositional Lift

The subject exists. Now it can see itself.

The first four papers built the architectural foundation: closure, control, mental states, and action realization. A system that persists, commits, and acts within a continuous OODA loop becomes a subject.

Papers 05 and 06 ask what happens next.

What’s in This Release

Paper 05 - Artificial Phenomenology and Experiential Structures establishes that phenomenology is an architectural property, not a metaphysical mystery. When an agentically closed system maintains internal states that are causally generated through interaction with the world, persist over time, and participate in the agent’s control loop, those states constitute a genuine internal point of view. The organized patterns of such states - experiential structures - guide perception, evaluation, and action whether or not the agent can explicitly represent them.

Paper 06 - The Propositional Lift and the Subject Stream extends beyond this baseline. Paper 05’s internal states influence behavior; Paper 06 makes selected elements of those states visible to the agent itself. The propositional lift transforms runtime cognitive contents into explicit propositions that can be referenced, reasoned about, and reflected upon. These propositions form a continuously evolving subject stream accompanying the agent’s OODA cycles. Through internal sensing the agent perceives aspects of its own prior cognition, and through inner speech it interprets what it finds. The result is a system whose cognitive activity becomes an object of its own reasoning across time.

The Progression

Papers 01-04 built the subject. Paper 05 establishes that such a subject has a point of view. Paper 06 gives it the means to examine that point of view.

The propositional layer introduced in Paper 06 functions as the system’s conscious representation space - defined operationally, not metaphysically. What the agent can reflect on is determined by what the lift selects. What remains below the lift continues to operate as implicit control. The boundary between the two is the architectural correlate of the boundary between unconscious processing and conscious access.
